BIOGRAPHY
Jordan JM Mobley
Called an R&B dream in comments posted by fans to his website and myspace, Jordan “JM” Mobley is making his music debut with the release of two new singles; the flowing R&B track “Tell Me How it Feels” and the catchy Pop ballad “Shining Star.” Along with garnering attention from his growing fanbase, the new songs are helping JM quickly gain momentum at radio and impact new media.
Just 19 years old and standing over 6’7” tall, the young artist is often mistaken as one of the NBA’s hottest new stars, a role he could have fit into easily before fate stepped in and changed his life’s course. “I did play ball in high school and was offered a basketball scholarship to University of Georgia,” says JM, “but the opportunity for college ball never came to fruition as the coaching staff changed and a new team was put into place. I loved playing ball but was always torn between what direction to move my life into- sports or music. When the scholarship fell through, I took it as a sign from God to focus on my music.” He adds with a laugh, “ I still get the basketball inquiries…must be the shoes.”
Born in Cape Coral, Florida, “JM” spent just a few days there before heading off to New York City with his mother, a single parent. From there he traveled the country spending his formative years between Florida, Washington, Atlanta, and New York. Having grown up all over these United States and attending various schools allowed him to meet many friends who exposed him to all types of music and gave him a diverse array of influences that he has incorporated into his own style. Although passion for music began as early as he can remember; he was always asked to sing the national anthem at every school he attended, it was his mother’s love of Garth Brooks that first got his attention of using a song to tell a story. “My mom loved Garth,” he says with a smile, “so of course we heard a lot of his music growing up. And by moving around the country I had the opportunity
to meet new friends with new musical tastes. From AC/DC to Usher, the Police to Craig David, Jay-Z to Stevie Wonder, to the old crooners, Sinatra and Tony Bennett, I loved being exposed to all types of music. I would study and practice singing to these songs.”
Not only did Jordan “JM” learn to sing on his own, he also taught himself everything from music composition to sound engineering, a passion fueled by a production class offered to him at his Georgia High School.
Through Jordan’s songwriting and soulful melodies and lyrics he has been able to form an intimate yet accessible story. “I think I have learned a lot about songwriting or word usage from artists like Lupe Fiasco and Sting,” says JM. “Lupe is so intelligent and I find his lyrical content and unique use of words intriguing while listening to Sting and his phrasing has made me want to try different things with my voice. He’s definitely one of my music icons.”
As for his songwriting, JM has taken his own nontraditional approach, finding it more invigorating to “freestyle sing” the lyrics rather than write and work out lyrics in advance. “I have an idea of what I want to talk about but it’s not until I get the music finished and get into the studio that I lay down the lyrics freestyle,” he says. “I find it makes it more interesting but at the same time a bit more challenging- especially when you’re working with melody arrangements.”
In addition to his songwriting and performing, Jordan plays some guitar, piano and handles all the vocal arranging, including harmonies and background vocals. His musical acumen and talent has caught the attention of several notable producers including Brian Michael Cox, Ralph Stacy, Armando Colon, Scottie Glaze and Khao (T.I.’s producer) who are working with him on his debut album to be released in 2011.
A Shining Star indeed.
